New program for 2012: Bachelor of Latin American Studies

The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences is very excited to announce some new programs for 2012.  One such program is the Bachelor of Latin American Studies. This program will draw on the teaching and research excellence of the ANU Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies (ANCLAS).

The Bachelor of Latin American Studies is a new and exciting program for students interested in contemporary Latin America and the region’s possibilities for cooperation. Tensions between the diverse traditions that have developed from its long and unique history and ancient heritage will be also explored.

The degree will begin in 2012 with a compulsory first year course called “An Introduction to Latin American Politics and Society”. The BLAS degree will be three years with an optional fourth Honours year. It will consist of a Latin American Studies major comprised of 8 courses drawn primarily from Politics/International Relations/Political Economy but also from History, Sociology, Anthropology, and the Spanish program.

Students will have the opportunity to study a major or minor in Spanish as well as complete a semester in abroad in Latin America.

This program is the only (and first) Latin American Studies degree in Australia.  It will attract a new generation of students studying this exciting and ever evolving region.
